i used to think about it all of the time,
despite the wind’s howl
and the snapped powerlines:
how we're buffeted yet unfaltering.
burnt rubber sings our folktale now.

driving nowhere to find the right direction,
speaking soft nonsense to build our purpose.
lost but happy, expanding our known section,
headlights twinkling in tandem,
flickering at random with starlight’s flourish.

a leaf pileup ablaze
in the cool, crisp air.
inhaling dark, deep haze,
the past evokes its vibrant flare.

future within striking distance,
we've so much left to give.
drove past miles of mischief,
breaking even just to live.

wind sails into car openings,
powerlines buckle against the breeze.
from on high, dead leaves approaching.
a hum drums up as we gain speed.
we crescendo recklessly.

in every pinch, we've got the people:
with a gait best described as regal,
around every block, walk working stiffs.
behind every good and evil,
lie rows of corn and scores of myths.

it's burning season,
let's plod on with heart,
with surefooted reason
and finish what we start.
